The California Teachers Association is mobilizing to oppose plans announced on January 5th by Governor Schwarzenegger that would gut Proposition 98′s school funding protections. Proposition 98 sets minimum funding levels for schools and requires 40 percent of the state budget to go to public education. The Governor’s plan would cost schools billions of dollars in the coming decades by converting Proposition 98 from a firm funding floor for public educaiton to a meaningless calculation.
The Governor has called the State Legislature into special session for the purpose of dealing with this proposal to revamp state education funding. This special session allows lawmakers to work quickly to implement these changes. ACAx1 4 (Keene) Spending Reform: is one of the proposals to be heard in this special session.
