The Sky Is Not Falling

Author: Diana Abasta & Kim Allender, Co-Presid

Lately our district seems to have adopted the view of Chicken Little that the fiscal sky is falling. We all need to resist the temptation to become a band of Turkey Lurkeys that fall for the doomsday message. Our district has substantial new monies which can be used to raise BUSD teacher salaries out of the bottom quartile of comparable Los Angeles County school districts.

- The Burbank Unified School District received 3.91% in new monies, which translates into approximately $4 million for the 2004-2005 school year.

- The Burbank Unified School District is currently projecting 13% in reserves for the 2004-2005 school year while the State of California only requires a 3% reserve.

- The Burbank Unified School District has a projected ending balance in Fund 71, a Retiree Benefit Fund, for school year 2004-2005 of $1,305,292, while the average annual district payout for retiree benefits is only $478,412.
