California Teachers Association Automatic Member Benefits

Having previously written about CTA’s goals and how CTA works for you, this month I would like to address the automatic benefits you receive as a member of CTA/NEA/GTA. Members are automatically eligible to participate in these valuable term life insurance programs at no additional cost.

CTA Death and Dismemberment Plan
This free life insurance benefit automatically covers you on September 1, following the date you become an eligible member of CTA. The CTA Death and Dismemberment Plan provides life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment benefits that increase with each year of continuous CTA membership, reaching the maximum benefit after ten years. The program is brought to you by the CTA Economic Benefits Trust. The benefits include: a Death Benefit up to $2000; An Accidental Death and Accidental Dismemberment Benefit up to $10,000; a life insurance benefit that increases with each year of continuous CTA membership; a $50,000 benefit if the member dies or suffers a dismemberment due to an accident or assault while engaged in any activity which was in the expressed or implied terms of his or her occupation, or while acting in the capacity of an Association leader. NEA Dues-Tab Insurance
This life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance benefit is also automatically included in your CTA membership at no additional cost. These benefits include: Death Benefit up to $1,000; Accidental Death and Dismemberment Benefit up to $5,000; Occupation/Association Leader Accidental Death and Dismemberment Benefit of $50,000; and a Life Insurance Benefit of $150,000 for unlawful homicide while on the job. CTA/NEA Educators Employment Liability
This policy is provided free of charge to CTA members as a benefit of membership. Agency fee payers do not receive coverage under this policy. Under the EEL policy, CTA members receive coverage for legal defense costs in lawsuits arising out of his or her educational employment activities. This free plan offers the following coverage: up to $1,000,000 coverage for legal defense costs in civil suits (except civil rights cases) arising out of educational employment activities; up to $300,000 coverage in civil rights cases; $3,000,000 per occurrence aggregate for all claims; up to $35,000 reimbursement of attorney fees and costs to defend employment related criminal proceedings; and $1,000 reimbursement per bail bond.
