Welcome Aboard Michael Romo

We are pleased to announce Michael Romo as our new Burbank - Glendale UniServ Executive Director. Michael comes to us from UTLA where he was a field representative in charge of over 100 sites and 5,000 teachers. We feel he will be a great addition to the Burbank Teachers Association.

Healthful Hints

As you know, BTA and the District have tentatively agreed on wages and benefits for this year. We are continuing to exchange language on other Articles and we are set to meet with the District again on February 4th.

State Budget Blues

The 2008 state budget for California looks grim. The state is projecting a $14 billion deficit for this year. Governor Arnold Swarzenegger has proposed major cuts in spending, including cuts to education to close the budget gap.

Farewell, Denise – BTA Will Miss You!

This month we must say goodbye to our good friend and colleague, Denise Jennex . Denise has served as the Executive Director of the Burbank- Glendale Uniserv for seven years. She has had a great personal and working relationship with Burbank teachers, and we are very sad and sorry to see her go.

Don’t Let Our Voices Be Silenced!

Beginning in December of 2005, the Burbank Board of Education has been in the process of revising the entire Board Policies and Administrative Regulation Manual with the assistance of the California School Boards Association. The Board has been recently presenting the proposed revisions at the meetings.

Thanks for the Memories

As Diana Abasta and I begin to write this final article for Presidents' Comments, it doesn't seem like six years has passed since we began as Co-Presidents. For me, the three terms we have served have reinforced daily the importance the Burbank Teachers Association plays in advancing the professionalism of our members and protecting the due process rights that allow us to make our voices heard.
